What is Encoding?
· Encoding is the process of getting information into your memory. There are three different types of encoding; Visual (Phonemic), acoustic (Structural), and semantic.
· Visual encoding is the process of taking information and putting it into your memory because of how the word looks. For example if the word is long or short, or what letter the word starts with and remembering this is encoding visually.
· Acoustic encoding is remembering how the word sounds such as if you are reading, and you start to read out loud -- you are acoustic learning.
· Semantic encoding is making meaning of a word, for example if you are learning what memory is and you find out the definition and why it is important you make meaning of it and have a better chance of remembering it later. This is the best type of encoding because it requires more effort which makes you think more about it and naturally memorize it.
